Well, I suppose that by definition of the U.K. music press, "the kids" are the punk audience, but that just goes to show that punk didn't percolate up from below any more than anything else did.

This American finds it very hard to imagine a progressive-rock fan chucking it all at a stroke in favor of punk unless there was something social going on there. Few people love anything *so much* as to risk losing social standing over it. That's the thing about "nerds" and "geeks" and their tastes--there's no reason to abandon the things they love because they never had social standing and giving those things up wouldn't help.

Oh, BTW, I think "MOTD" is fine for what it is. I don't think I would've wanted it on *Wind & Wuthering* for the reason cited above, even though I'm fine with albums with a lot of range. But hey, they got it out, didn't they?Jeff Blankshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13181190693328758311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3954716905684943860.post-58011963363483166192020-05-01T14:39:54.356+01:002020-05-01T14:39:54.356+01:00 Dad worked at London Weekend Television in their ... Dad worked at London Weekend Television in their ‘Outside Broadcast Unit’ covering the Big Match. As time went on going to games became the main way we saw each other. I’d make my way to White Hart Lane, seek out the Outside Broadcast trucks and he’d come and pick me up. At Tottenham they had a small TV gantry where commentator Brian Moore and a sound guy would sit. Fortunately for me there was always room there for a little one and there we sat hovering above the Shelf-side, ‘Heaven on a Saturday’ for this fan. Dad’s job was Floor Manager and he handled all the links between the commentary box and the production van parked outside the ground. The Quilty viewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11255128891932357555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3954716905684943860.post-75284252281265771932018-02-17T13:15:34.347+00:002018-02-17T13:15:34.347+00:00A warm tribute to an extraordinary lover of the ga...A warm tribute to an extraordinary lover of the game - well done.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3954716905684943860.post-36448809567469942032016-09-09T04:49:32.838+01:002016-09-09T04:49:32.838+01:00Put on your hat and scarf, have a drink, have a la...Put on your hat and scarf, have a drink, have a larf...

C'mon you dolts the song is a sardonically sweet (or is it a sweetly sardonic) look at memories of watching a game on Saturday. I don't hear any earnestness at all, especially not during the comic narration in the fade (which echoes the Who's similarly giddy "Dogs," which might have served as the inspiration for this tune).

One reason this song was left off "Wind and Wuthering" is because it's jovial mood didn't fit in with the rather somber vibe of that LP.

Not everything is serious in life. Reading this reminded me of the feminists from a few years ago who also missed the humorous elements of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and declared it a rape anthem.

I think the idea of humor is starting to be lost on the current generation, who seem to take offense to things when they're not taking them personally.

The song that followed this on the original EP was equally as silly. That song, called "Pigeons," was a diatribe against the bird that had an opening line that asked who put "fifty tons of sh*t on the Foreign Office roof?" I'm waiting for the day someone decides to take that one seriously as well: "Genesis: Promoting cruelty to animals! Collins was an AWESOME drummer and multi-instrumentalist and singer. Not a fan of all his songs but he put his heart out there and he was hugely popular. Maybe he was a bit too omnipresent in the 80's / 90's but as was said above, always seemed like a very likeable man with a great sense of humour as well as a truly world-class musician.

Keith.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3954716905684943860.post-70078360544838830472016-06-09T19:50:43.693+01:002016-06-09T19:50:43.693+01:00Brilliant stuff, thanks!

I love this song....sure the lyrics are cliched but it is so easy to castigate song lyrics....most song lyrics can be held to ridicule in the light of day...I think these song lyrics are straightforward and amusing, the guitar riffs are terrific and the melody is toe tapping and engaging....this was Steve Hacketts last contribution to Genesis and how they missed him subsequently. It is a catchy song in my humble opinion and the EP it came from is great....Pigeons is another catchy tune and Inside and Out is one of the best Genesis tracks ever and was shockingly omitted from the Wind and Wuthering album, instead replaced by the awful Your Own Special Way. A great EP and a great little song......haters will hate.....its all about opinions.....my opinion is somewhat different.
